major developments in my world, just wanted to let you all know about it.
i'm meeting with the elder tomarrow afternoon.
i'm going to stick heavy to the watchtowers interpretation of matthew 24 and how it is unbalanced, sensationalized and out of touch with any historical evidence or respect for the bible.
Drew,
All it took for me was one flaw in the WTBTS version of things for the whole house of cards to fall. The reason? Because it claims it is the only truth. By inculcating me with their black and white thinking from the day I was born, it was black and white thinking, on my part, that allowed one chink to condemn them completely. Perhaps this was what kicked in your wife?
My exit was in the 80s, though. I understand there is a lot of talk of "imperfect humans" these days, and waiting on Jehovah... So maybe they filled that hole with some putty since I've been gone.
Best of life to you and your wife,
Shoshana
years ago when i was attending my old kh there was an elder that was very stern.
bro glen(not his real name) used to be very firm in telling students about their talks not being good, or where they needed to improve.
i know i was "terrified" of bro glen.
Pioneer Gal I knew had problems with her husband, and he spanked her. She got disfellowshipped, I think for not being a submissive wife. This was in the late 1980s.
She divorced him (after the disfellowshipping), went to college and married a really cool guy. I hope they're still married....

truthseeker just posted about the wt congregations discouraging large social gathering or parties.. in the last little while my wife has gone to a few "book study parties" and has commented that other book studies were doing the same.. it seemed a little strange to me that this was happening as most of her congregation seems cold and distant at the best of times.. i wonder if it is a new "program" started by the wt to hype up the old "brotherly love" thing.has anybody heard or seen this to be happening lately if you are still close enough to know?
These are starting to sound like a Chavurah. (see this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chavurah ) Many of my Jewish friends have a formal agreement with a group of families in which they gather for holidays and important family events, such as birthdays, graduations, etc. Sort of an extended family role, with a Jewish umph...When one is without an extended family nearby (for whatever reason), Chavarot provide a context to participate in the cultural aspects of Judaism.
1) I'd bet these "book study parties" are not sanctioned "from above"
2) I'd also bet that if they get too widespread someone is gonna put the kabosh on them.
3) And, using their circular logic, this makes them a good thing, which means the society won't like it, which means they will have to stop, which means they were a good thing to start with, anyway...
Back in the 70s, a new elder and his family with a ton of kids moved to our congregation. They hosted our bookstudy and every week provided goodies for the entire group after the meeting. It was kinda nice (and where I discovered the "Wheat Thin"). They also had one congregation party, where they went all out with plans for fun things to do for all the age groups.
That was the only party, and for some reason the book study was disbanded. I don't know that I ever knew why, or even wondered why. That was a nice family, and I suspect he was a "good elder." They eventually moved on.

i might go to the cinema.
i may go to the cinema.
what's the difference.
Me? Neither. I go to the movies....
i just received an email from a faithful witness, re their co's visit.
"our co just came back from two months co training.
he said there were two important things headquarters want the brothers to know:.
Why can't they see that something is seriously wrong when they have to have a talk titled, "Don't Give Up"? If it were the spiritual paradise they say it, there would be no temptation or need to give up... Shoshana
i just became a doctor?
juris doctor to be exact.
done, caput.
I just became a doctor? Juris Doctor to be exact. Done, caput. I just finished law school tonight. And my dog just sleeps on the couch, like any other evening. You would think at least he would be impressed.
Whatever.

if a spouse has been unfaithful and a legal divorce has been finalized is the marriage over in the church's eyes?
i've been told by the elders that i must witness the adultry or provide two witnesses that can speak to the adultry.
my ex-spouse will never confess to his past or current sexual acts.
If two elders can park all night in front of a woman's house in their 1982 VW Vanagon to observe a "brother" go into the house at night, and not leave until the morning, and call that "fornication," it would seem as though you and another reasonable person could do the same. (Except I'd skip the part where you sit out there all night. Just bring someone who will say she sat there with you...Bearing false witness, all in a good days' divorce...)

(just don't testify to it in an actual court. That's perjure, and a crime...)
a riddle for you to figure out
three kids go into a store to buy a picture frame for their mom for mothers day.
they find a frame that costs $30.
Slacker, your logic is flawed. Each kid spent ten and got 1 dollar back, not $.666666. (High School math teacher here, not trying to be a smart ass for no reason, but I do have some ego to protect....) Your logic is the same as the problem.. You are combining what the shopkeeper kept with what the shopkeeper gave back. They are mutually exclusive funds.
